Who is eligible for Special Education?
There are 13 different disability categories under which a student may be found eligible for special education. These categories are:
• Autism
• Deafness
• Deaf-blindness
• Hearing impairment
• Intellectual Disability
• Multiple disabilities
• Orthopedic impairment
• Other health impairment
• Emotional disturbance
• Specific learning disability
• Speech or language impairment
• Traumatic brain injury
• Visual impairment, including blindness.
According to the IDEA, the disability must adversely affect a student's educational performance. That is, the disability must cause the child to need special education and related services.
